GeoToll’s core technology is based on enhanced GPS (“e-GPS”), which equips smartphones with automatic tolling capabilities on all types of toll roads – express lanes, managed lanes, general purpose lanes, and toll bridges – with over 99% accuracy. GeoToll’s mobile technology can solve the lack of interoperability between divergent tolling protocols that currently exist across state and local toll agencies in the US. The GeoToll front-end hardware is supported by a smartphone app, which is managed by a back‐office system that permits optional outsourcing of customer service and account maintenance from toll agencies to GeoToll.

The Product

GeoToll provides toll agencies and drivers with a host of benefits that are unavailable with the typical transponder. Our app allows drivers to pay tolls automatically using multiple cars and/or rental cars, track their toll spending, and export their information in convenient expense reports. We enable toll agencies to save money, increase tolling transaction accuracy, and outsource account management functions to our back-office system. GeoToll guarantees payment of all toll transactions, because we understand that 100% accuracy is a priority for toll operators.

What is GeoToll?

GeoToll is a mobile payment technology company specializing in tolling. We offer an app enabled with an enhanced GPS solution (“e-GPS”), which allows drivers to travel through any electronic toll facility that is a GeoToll partner without cash or any particular transponder (e.g. SunPass). It works with the reliability, accuracy, and security of a traditional transponder, but adds a feature-rich, customizable app, and enables national interoperability without the need for toll fee reconciliation between agencies or via the Hub.

What is e-GPS?

Enhanced GPS, or e-GPS, is a patent pending technology developed by GeoToll that delivers lane-level accuracy for tracking vehicles and paying tolls. The ability to identify a vehicle in either a general-purpose lane or the nearby express lane is vital to operating toll roads and collecting tolls from express lane motorists. E-GPS allows for identification of toll transactions within milliseconds of toll agency recorded events and allows for error-free reconciliation of GeoToll transactions.

What can I do with a GeoToll-equipped phone?

You can pay a toll or fee at any toll or priced facility that participates in the GeoToll service or is part of the nationwide network of interoperability hubs.

What kind of phone do I need to use it?

Both Android and iPhone users can use the GeoToll app.

Where do I have to place the phone in the car?

Your phone should be in the front passenger area of the vehicle, ideally in a phone holder on your dashboard. It should not, for example, be in the trunk or buried deep in the glove-box or in a metal container of any sort. A low-cost phone holder can be provided by GeoToll when you sign up for the app and transponder.

Will my GeoToll-equipped phone interfere with other wireless devices in the vehicle, or with other toll tags?

Just as smartphones do not interfere with electronic tolling systems today, neither will a GeoToll-equipped phone. If you have an existing toll tag in the vehicle with a GeoToll-enabled phone, the system detects the proper device and account to charge through a back-office reconciliation process (similar to how toll roads work in congested open-road tolling environments with lots of cars very close to each other). Therefore, we recommend that you remove any other toll tags / transponders, but you will never be charged twice.

How do I know that the toll operator has charged my GeoToll account properly?

Unlike toll tags today, you can program your GeoToll app to notify you: 1) when you are approaching a toll point; 2) when the toll was paid; and 3) how much you paid. The app has user-friendly reporting capabilities that allow you to categorize tolls for business and personal use and to export expense reports conveniently for any period selected. Miles traveled are also stored and can be exported for expense reporting purposes.

What happens if I leave my phone off?

Leaving your phone off will deactivate the app feature that ’wakes up’ the tag prior to the toll point. Just as if you used a toll road with no tag, the tag will not be read. However, every ‘gate-less’ or ‘open road’ toll facility today employs cameras to photograph the license plate for enforcement purposes. If you are a GeoToll account holder, you will provide your license plate (or plates) to GeoToll. The plate number that was photographed would be referenced to a database of ’valid’ GeoToll accounts and you would be charged accordingly – with a friendly reminder to please keep your phone charged and on when driving on toll roads!

How can I share the expense of toll trips with my carpool partners?

Sharing toll fees is easy with the GeoToll app. Simply have all passengers download the app and choose a payment method. The app allows splitting of the tolls amongst all occupants according to the primary driver. Toll trips and allocated charges are recorded in each person’s app and are available for reporting.

Can I use GeoToll when I rent a vehicle?

Yes. Tired of paying excessive daily use fees to rental car agencies? Now you can simply download the GeoToll app, register the rental car license plate along with your credit card information and start driving using the GeoToll app. Remember to opt-out of the rental agency provided transponder or pay-by-plate toll payment methods. GeoToll will transmit your rental car license plate to the toll agency for processing as a GeoToll customer at rates far below what the rental car agency charges.

What is the cost to use GeoToll?

To the GeoToll toll road user, there is a nominal, one-time cost to obtain your GeoToll transponder after having downloaded the app. The toll paid via your GeoToll-enabled phone will be less than the cost to drive the toll road without a transponder and letting the agency send a bill after having identified you via the DMV. For toll agencies that do not charge a higher fee for “pay-by-plate”, GeoToll customers will pay a convenience fee, typically in the $.25-$.50 range per transaction.

How accurate is GeoToll compared to a traditional toll tag?

A GeoToll-equipped phone with e-GPS is equally as accurate as, if not more accurate than, a traditional RFID toll tag. In a Pilot test, GeoToll was able to identify 5% of transactions that were not read by the agency.

Can a toll agency manage the GeoToll account?

Yes – the standard service provided by GeoToll includes management of the customers who use GeoToll. As an option, toll agencies can use the GeoToll Back Office System (BOS) to manage GeoToll accounts. There are hybrid arrangements for account management as well that GeoToll is happy to discuss in order to meet the business objectives of the tolling agency and to provide best of class customer service.

How are all GeoToll transactions guaranteed?

Account reconciliation and auditing processes are established between GeoToll and host toll facilities to ensure 1:1 accounting. In short, if a GeoToll-enabled smartphone traversed the toll-point, then GeoToll remits the proper payment. For the toll agency, there are no transponders to distribute, no credit cards and expiration dates to deal with, and no need to interact with DMV databases to obtain the registered owner (which often results in the wrong motorist being billed). GeoToll-guaranteed transactions will likely be the least costly transactions a toll operator has to process.
